Wind chimes are chimes constructed from suspended tubes, and are made of various materials. Wind chimes are usually hung at a window so the they can be played at by the wind. They are also hung outside or on trees. Sound can be produced when the tubes or rods come in contact with a suspended central clapper, in the form of a ball or horizontal disk, or each other. Wind chimes may be used to observe changes in wind direction, depending on where they are hung. They also make great decorative items and gift items.

Wind Chimes come in various shapes and sizes. They are made from various materials. The sound they produce differs on the basis of the material used. Wind chimes fall under two categroies- the ones that are used solely for decorative and aesthetic purposes; and the musical chimes. Some of the materials that are commonly used to make wind chimes include-

- Bamboo Wind Chimmes- Bamboo is a staple crop and renewable resource, and Bamboo Wind Chimes offer you the opportunity to create your own little backyard tropical retreat from today's hectic and hurried world.

- Capiz Wind Chimes- these chimes are made with natural shell. Known as the mother-of-pearl shell or "pearl shell" capiz shells are thin and in some cases nearly transparent. The thin Capiz shell produces a delicate tinkling sound when they move together, even in the gentlest breeze.

- Traditional Wind chimes- These are made with made with classic components, styled with aluminum, brass, copper or bronze tubes.

- Glass Wind Chimes- these make a lovely, delicate bell-like sound. The sky is the limit on the color palette used for creating these unique, and individual glass wind chimes.

- Inner Wind Chimes- these are a new creation which can be used indoors with the wind catcher being placed out doors. Each piece has magnets attached to them. When the breeze blows outside and swings the wind-catcher, the chime inside swings by way of the magnets repelling each other.

The decorative wind chimes are made using beads, acrylic, terracotta or clay. These do not produce any sound, but have great aesthetic appeal.

Apart from the difference in the styles, there is great difference even in the uses of the wind chimes. The types of the wind chimes can be seen as follows:

- Meditation wind chimes- these are small wind chimes and have a low sound so that they do not disturb anyone.

- Love Wind Chimes- These are generally made from brass and are loud. They have maximum durability. They have a heart shaped hanger which creates an interesting visual effect no mater where they are placed.

- Musical chimes- these have intricate designs, use motifs and create a lot of sound. They are economical and sturdy.

- Serenity Wind Chimes- these are mainly used for Feng Shui purposes. They have a gold finish and have high frequency sound.
